History -Volu International Organisation (VIO)

In the wake of preparations towards the 50th anniversary (golden jubilee) celebration of the Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana (VOLU) in 2006, consultation and mobilisation was high among active and passive members of this association living in Europe. There was the need for them to show their solidarity by linking up with this important landmark event. Few meetings of these members led to the creation and inauguration of two formalised groups in London and Copenhagen respectively in April 2006.

Thereafter, these two groups continue to mobilise and organise its members and all interested persons through socio-cultural events – for example, the Annual Get-together of the London based group. The activities of these two groups attracted other members from neighbouring countries to join. The enlarged international membership of the groups led them to be referred under the name of Volu International.

After a special funds raising activities in 2011 to support VOLU, the groups sent a formal delegation in May 2012 to meet the management board of VOLU to formally introduced its existence, presented a cash donation, and seeked to establish a direct working relationship. The outcome of this meeting was positive and encouraging.

In 2014, the London group created a Volu International WhatsApp platform, a realisation of one of its objectives to use modern information and communication technologies as its modus operandi. This brought in more virtual members and sympathisers from the European and American continents. This new momentum and interest generated, led the 2015 annual London meeting to decide on the institution of a unified body to administer Volu International. The legal framework or the constitution for this unified body was adopted in 2016.  The two main groups (London and Copenhagen) therefore became the founding branches of what we now have as Volu International Organisation (VIO), with an operational objective to create other diaspora groups in the BENELUX, Germany, USA, or whichever country that justify not less than 5 members.

VIO, which started basically as fraternity and solidarity groups, exist since 2016 with more broad objectives geared towards the creation of an international membership network that promote sustainable development for the benefit of the public through volunteering; and to support the work of VOLU, through resources mobilisation, with socio-economic development projects that improve the lives of rural and peri-urban communities in Ghana.

Our Philosophy

1. To provide an international platform through networking that mobilises members and all interested persons for voluntary services, solidarity and advancement.
2.
To promote and bring together people from different backgrounds, including the educated, illiterates, townspeople, villagers and of all nationalities, in a common respect to voluntary work by doing construction work in their spare time, support community capacity and capability building, and contribute to urban and rural regeneration programmes.

3.  To establish permanent links with the Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana (VOLU) and cooperate with other international voluntary organisations to develop common projects that improves the lives of rural and peri-urban communities in Ghana.
4. To explore and provide opportunities for cultural awareness and advancement, and the practical exchanges of volunteers between VIO and other international voluntary organisations.
